No furlough for jailed student activist

Majid-Tavakoli1

Jailed Iranian student activist Majid Tavakoli has been denied a furlough three and a half years into his jail term.

Daneshjoo News reports that the Tehran Prosecutor’s office has reportedly informed the family that the Intelligence Ministry is refusing leave for Tavakoli.

His family has already put up his bail of 6 billion rials, but the judiciary has refused to approve his leave.

The report indicates that if the two government bodies, the judiciary and the Intelligence Ministry, refuse to grant Tavakoli his leave, the family will consider opening up to the media and listing its grievances against the public authorities.

Tavakoli was arrested in December 2009 and sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for “assembly and clouding against the regime”, “propaganda against the regime”, “insulting the leader” and “insulting the president.”
