Iran’s Guardians Council, which supervises the country’s electoral process, has denied media reports it might disqualify one of the eight candidates running in the June 14 presidential election.

A council spokesman said the body is not reviewing the qualifications of any of the candidates.

Iranian media on June 9 reported that the Guardians Council might disqualify former nuclear negotiator Hassan Rohani, a centrist who has made statements critical of the country’s controversial nuclear program.

Rohani has said the program — which much of the international communty suspects is aimed at developing nuclear weapons — has harmed Iran’s economy.

In addition, supporters at Rohani’s campaign appearances have chanted for the release of political prisoners.
