Mehdi Karoubi, the Iranian opposition leader who has been under house arrest since February 2011, has been allowed a visit with his family physician, his son reported on Thursday December 6.

Saham News reports that the opposition leader was under the care of his family’s trusted physician for the past few days and was taken to Laleh Hospital in Tehran to continue his treatment but is now under house arresrt again.

Karroubi’s son, Mohammad Taghi Karroubi, previously had expressed grave concern about the delays made in providing adequate medical care for his father.

Saham News reports that in the past three weeks, Mehdi Karroubi has been showing symptoms such as weight loss, loss of appetite, dizziness and nausea, for which the family had urged the authorities to transfer him to a hospital.

This is the second time that the political leader has been taken to hospital in recent months.

Karroubi was put under house arrest together with his wife in February of 2011 after he and his colleague, MirHosein Mousavi, called for a demonstration in support of the Arab Movements in the region.

MirHosein Mousavi and his wife Zahra Rahnavard have also been under house arrest since then.

The two opposition leaders, who were presidential candidates in 2009, challenged the election victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which triggered widespread mass protests in the streets of Iran.

Mousavi, Rahnavard and Karroubi have been under house arrest for 650 days without any formal charges being laid against them.
