Dr. Mehdi Khazali Sentenced to 14 Years Prison, 10 Years Exile & 90 Lashes

February 5th, 2012 [BBC Farsi] – Dr. Mehdi Khazali, web blogger critical of the ruling government of Iran was sentenced today by the 26th branch of the Revolutionary Court presided by Judge Pir Abbasi  to 14 years in prison, 10 years exile and 90 lashes.

The sentence was also confirmed by Dr. Khazali’s lawyer Mohammad Hossein Aghassi.

It is worth mentioning that this harsh sentence was rendered by the Revolutionary Court despite the fact that Dr. Khazali is reportedly in dire physical condition and on the 27th day of a hunger strike. Furthermore, Dr. Khazali was reportedly transferred to the infirmary at Evin prison two days ago as a result of a bleeding ulcer.

Mehdi Khazali was arrested on numerous occasions after the 10th presidential elections in Iran.  He is the son of Ayatollah Abolfazl Khazali, a member of the Assembly of Experts.

Translator’s Note: According to reports by Khabarnegaran Sabz, Dr. Khazali’s facebook page confirms that Dr. Khazali was sentenced by the 26th branch of the Revolutionary Court presided over by Judge Pir Abbassi to 90 lashes, 14 years imprisonment at Borazjan Prison in Bushehr Province and another 10 years in exile in Borazjan upon completion of his prison sentence.
