Political prisoner and blogger Hossein Ronaghi Maleki was released from Evin prison today.

According to Kaleme blogger and human rights activist Hossein Ronaghi was detained on December 13, 2009 at his home in Malekan close to Tabriz. He was held for 13 months in solitary confinement in Ward 2-A of Evin prison under severe physical torture and psychological duress in a futile effort to extract false televised confessions. Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court later handed him a 15-year prison sentence.

During his time in prison, Hossein Ronaghi who suffers from severe kidney disease resulting from his torture in prison, has launched several hunger strikes in protest of his ill treatment and lack of medical attention while behind bars. He and his family have consistently asked that Hossein be allowed hospitalization outside the prison facility in order to receive vital medical treatment.

The lack of attention to his medical needs throughout the years has exasperated his illnesses to dangerous levels.

According to Kaleme, it is not yet clear if this political prisoner has been released on medical furlough or if his prison sentence has been suspended.
