Iranian authorities have arrested an Islamic scholar from Iraq, according to media reports.

Ahmed al Qabbanji, known for his translation of Iran scholar Abdul Karim Soroush’s works into Arabic, was reportedly arrested in Qom on charges of “deviation” from Islam and promoting “deviant thoughts”.

Qabbanji, himself a cleric, is a resident of Qom and some of his family are members of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, a leading Shiite group in the country.
