UK Charge d’Affaires in a response to Mahmoud Ahamadinejad’s comments about the recent riots in Britain said any investigators are welcome in their country and asked that Iran do the same and allow entry to the UN Special Rapporteur.
The United Kingdom Charge d’Affaires, Jane Marriott wrote a response to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s remarks regarding the events in her country, specifically the “need to end clashes with the rioters during the recent unrest in Britain” and the comments from the Islamic Republic’s spokesperson condemning the government and police force of Britain. The UK Charge d’Affaires in her letter addressed all the assertions and criticisms.
According to Jaras News, Jane Marriott responded to these accusations made by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Ramin Mehmanparast (Iran’s diplomatic spokesperson) on the website of the Great Britain Embassy. Along with addressing the recent riots in Britain, she asked that the government of Iran allow the UN Special Rapporteur entry into their country.
The text of the letter written by Jane Marriott, the Charge d’Affaires at the Great Britain Embassy is as follows:
August 11, 2011
Mr.Ramin Mehmanparast
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Islamic Republic of Iran
,Tehran
Dear Sir,
I read with interest your statement of 9 August 2011 in which you called on independent human rights bodies to investigate the death of Mark Duggan. I have also seen a record of HE President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s speech of yesterday, in which he called on the United Nations to condemn the United Kingdom’s handling of the recent riots that have taken place in some cities within the UK.
Firstly, I would like to explain that the circumstances of the death of Mr Duggan are being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission. They are independent of Government but of course the UK government will consider their findings fully.
I would also like to make clear that British policing is among the best in the world and the UK police service is handling the demonstrations with professionalism. They maintain high standards and have dealt with challenging circumstances. The independent media in the UK, which has been covering the riots in detail and had full freedom to do so, has confirmed this view.
However, we recognise that you may wish to discuss your concerns in more detail with us. I would, therefore, be delighted to meet with you or the head of the Majlis Human Rights Committee, Ms Zohreh Elahian – or any other appropriate authority – to address your concerns.
Finally, I would remind you that the UK has a standing invitation to all UN Special Rapporteurs and has facilitated the visits of a number of these rapporteurs to the UK in recent years. I urge the Iranian Government to extend a similar courtesy to the dedicated UN Special Rapporteur for the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ahmed Shaheed, to enable him to address the international community’s grave concerns about ongoing human rights violations within Iran.
I look forward to your response. Meanwhile, you may wish to visit our website www.ukiniran.fco.gov.uk where you can find my blog on the recent unrest and our latest updates.
Yours sincerely
